SAFETY

Safety is YOUR responsibility

The methods and materials involved in any form of metalcasting operation are VERY hazardous.
Educate yourself on the proper safety precautions before attempting any metalcasting operations.

1. Wear eye protection, gloves, spats (covering top of feet), and thick clothing protecting all exposed skin on arms and legs. NO polyester or synthetic clothing.
2. Sand Floor in pouring area shall be clear of all objects not involved in pouring.
3. Clamp or weight up molds that require it.
4. Metal added to heat must be free of moisture and impurities.
5. Metal added to heat during melt must be preheated.
6. Skimmers and other melting tools must be preheated before use.
7. Move Slowly while removing crucible from furnace and moving to mold.
8. USE COMMON SENSE! Do not look into exhaust during operation.
9. Inspect crucibles before use.
10. Inspect propane lines.
11. Use outdoors only.
12. No alcohol or drug use.
13. Wear respiratory protection while melting copper/zinc-base alloys (brass, gunmetal bronzes).

More things to keep in mind…

· Molten metal spilt on concrete will cause concrete to explode.

· Always use clean metal to charge the crucible. Combustion residues from some lubricants and paint coatings can be toxic as well as cause casting deffects.

· Always operate in a well ventilated area. Fumes and dusts from combustion, fluxes and metals can be toxic.

· Spilled molten metal can travel a great distance. Operate in a clear work area.

· Molten metal contacting even trace amounts of water can have explosive results.

· Think about what you are doing at all times … focus on the job at hand and the next step.

Educate yourself beforehand and
always be careful of your own and bystander safety.
